Dental Camp at Bhotechaur Health Clinic, March 2009

Existing conditions:

Most of Nepal's 28.5 million people have little access to regular health care services which some of us may take for granted. One such service is dental work. It is difficult to imagine having a throbbing infected tooth and needing an extraction when help can only be found by walking for a few days, and only if you can afford to pay for it. Difficult as it is for us to imagine, this is the situation for most of the 76% of the Nepalese population who live in the rural areas as subsistence farmers.
Fortunately for those who live in the steep Himalayan foothills around Bhotechaur, the professional staff at the Bhotechaur Health Clinic recently completed a very successful two-day dental camp. This is of great value to the overall health of the community, bringing to the fore a greater awareness of the importance of proper maintenance and personal hygiene.

What your dollars have just done:
Through the generosity and good will of our donors who make it all possible, our Bright Futures Foundation grant to the Bhotechaur Health Clinic paid the total cost of the two-day dental camp.

What are the numbers? Well, here they are!

The clinic hired 2 dentists, 4 nurses, and 4 assistants. A total of 187 dental patients were seen and treated. The men-to-women ratio was about equal. A total of 144 people had extractions performed, 22 people had their teeth scaled, 5 people had cement fillings done, and 16 people were referred on to Kathmandu with severe problems.
The total cost for the two days was $775 dollars! This makes the average cost per patient only $4.14 - about the cost of a double short mocha and a tip. Dollars still work wonders!
